What personal data I collect and why I collect it

This website has no ads or trackers. However the website server collects visitor’s IP address, user-agent and referer. These aren’t retained and are regularly destroyed.

There is some data collected and not destroyed if visitors comment.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the website, it collects the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Cookies/Site Data

The site uses “session storage” to display emoji faster. No information is sent to the site/server and the information remains in the browser only, to help display pages faster.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year. The default is opt-out, however.

Nonetheless, there are cookies if you comment which expire immediately.

There are no third-party cookies in this website.

Embedded content from other websites

As a policy, there is no embedded content from other websites. The website uses Google Fonts and emoji from WordPress, although it is not called “embedded content”.

There are no third party frames or scripts on this site.

This website doesn’t use any analytics.

This is an academic site and no data is shared with anyone.

How long I retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments on this website, you can request to receive an export file of the personal data I hold about you, including any data you have provided to me. You can also request that I delete any personal data I hold about you. This does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where I send your data

Visitor comments are checked through Automattic‘s spam detection service Akismet. Their policy:

Akismet Commenter Information: We collect information about visitors who comment on Sites that use our Akismet anti-spam service. The information we collect depends on how the User sets up Akismet for the Site, but typically includes the commenter’s IP address, user agent, referrer, and Site URL (along with other information directly provided by the commenter such as their name, username, email address…oh, and the comment itself, of course).

How I protect your data

Commenters’ name and email address is available to me. This isn’t shared with anyone, nor does the website obtain information from other places on commenters. Visitors’ IP address and browser user agent is sent to the server where this website is hosted. These are regularly deleted and no data analysis is done on them.

What data breach procedures I have in place

Comments are typically deleted after I respond to the commenter. So there is hardly a case for data breach.
